Being Silent is Sometimes for the Best for Reflection

These past two months have been eye opening for me.  Being silent is the best thing for me when I need to reflect.  Sometimes, the less noise we put into the universe, the better.  Since the election, it has seemed as though the country as a whole has not been on the same footing.  Many American’s are grappling with what to do to protect immigrants, the elderly, and children.  This week, I was in Washington, DC for the Shot@Life Summit.  We had over 100 meetings on Capitol Hill and I think they were largely successful.  Many of the people on the Hill were fighting for the same organizations if not for the same causes.

The theme that continued to run through my mind as I walked the halls was “Look at all these American’s exercising their rights.”  We are American’s and many of us share the same morals even if we do not share the same how to get to the destination.  I looked at the sea of faces, black, white, and brown and realized that we are not so different.  We all want what is right for the country.

I just wanted to drop this off with you to tell you what you can do to impact the world even if it’s only from your couch.

  1. Send your Rep or Senator a message.  Email or phone calls are effective.  You can go to Common Cause and type in your information and find out who is who in your area.  Remember there are two Senator.
  2. Write a letter to the editor or an op ed about what you are thinking and feeling.  Let your community know that even if we don’t agree, we want what is best for the American people.
  3. Attend town halls and find where you fit politically and attend a meeting for that party and find out what you can do.
  4. Register someone to vote.  Make sure that you get the right voters registration card and register a friend’s daughter that is just turning eighteen .
  5. Remember that politics are messy and not perfect.  Don’t expect perfection from human beings.  Continue to work with your elected officials or their staff to build a relationship so that they know where you stand and mention that there are other’s in your community that believe the same thing that you do.

These are just a few tips, however, there are plenty more out there.  These are my top five.  Don’t give up, don’t give in.  Time for mourning is over, it’s time to get work.
